Sharkfin or Longfin Boomerang Discus

A few months ago we presented the Sharkfin Discus to the world in our Dutch news blog. At that time the breeder was just showing his first samples to the world and told us:

“The King of Aquarium has gone through another phase of evolution. This time it manifests itself as a long fin variant, which I gamely name the “Sharksfin Discus”. The fins are not only elegantly longer but it is embedded with texture of long and unbroken vertical lines (do enlarge pictures to see), making it uniquely different from that of a normal discus.

Whether a hobbyist can appreciate or not the beauty of this new refreshing variety, this phenomenon is a natural biological discus evolution. Somewhere in the world, I am certain more new and beautiful varieties will emerged in the future. This is why keeping discus is such an exciting, stimulating and rewarding hobby.

However, after six long generations trying to ‘fix’ and perfecting it, I still have not successfully bred a true strain. I only managed to produce a small number of Sharksfin out of every spawn, the rest are typical, normal looking healthy discus. Advice from expert breeders and geneticists on this aspect are very much welcomed and appreciated.

For now, I guess we can only appreciate this beauty on pictures.”

Two months later he informed us about teaming up with Fish Trade Zone to bring this strain to the market:

“Hi everyone, after weeks of discussion and planning, we are pleased to announce that we will be working with Jeffrey Yang of Fish Trade Zone (Malaysia) to distribute this strain to the rest of the world. Fish Trade Zone (FTZ) is actively and extensively exporting discus from Malaysia to the rest of the world. Therefore it is a logical move to be collaborating with FTZ as customers can complement the order of Sharksfin discus together with the many other strains of discus that they are able to offer.

For native english speakers, particularly outside of Asia, Jeffrey Yang can be contacted at info@fishtradezone.com.

For Asian customers, please do feel free to approach us directly too in Hong Kong. We will be most happy to assist.

Things must have gone very rapidly especially now this fish was shown at the Aquarama 2013 last month, but now under the name “Longfin Boomerang Discus”.

Whatever name this fish is given, it’s not my favorite mutant.
